According to Our College Colors (1949) by Henry L. Snyder, dark blue and light blue were probably chosen when Charlotte Female Institute was founded in 1857, but no other information about how these colors were chosen was available. Charlotte Female Institute became Queens College in 1912. Today, Queens University of Charlotte uses navy blue and “Vegas gold” (old gold) as its school colors.
Citations in the World Almanac (listed by cover date; color information is from the previous year): dark blue/light blue (1923-1935)
Academic hood lists published by the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume (IBAC) in 1927 and 1948 described Queens College as having a dark blue hood lining with a light blue chevron. However, a list compiled by Kevin Sheard in Academic Dress and Insignia of the World (1970) and an IBAC list from 1972 both described the college’s hood lining with interchanged colors: light blue with a dark blue chevron. Here the original Intercollegiate Bureau assignment has been retained.
