The first reference to an academic hood lining pattern for Iona College can be found in Kevin Sheard’s Academic Dress and Insignia of the World (1970), where the college was said to be using a lining of McLean of Duart tartan. This pattern must have been registered with the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume (IBAC) in the 1950s or 1960s because it was cited in an IBAC list from 1972 but not in a list from 1948.

Iona College students adopted maroon and gold as their school colors not long after the college was founded in 1940. The college also makes extensive use of the McLean of Duart tartan pattern in its graphic materials.
