Detailed historical information about the black, white, and old gold colors of Harvey Mudd College is not available at this time.
The Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume (IBAC) probably did not assign an official hood lining pattern to Harvey Mudd College. In Academic Heraldry in America (1962), Kevin Sheard reported that the college did not use academic hoods during commencement exercises, but by the time Sheard updated his information for Academic Dress and Insignia of the World (1970), Harvey Mudd was using a hood lined old gold with two chevrons: the upper chevron was black and the lower chevron was white. A 1972 compilation of hood lining patterns from the IBAC repeated this information.
