Dominican priests and nuns wear black cloaks over their white habits, which is why Dominican College adopted black as its school color in 1952. How and when white and red were added is not currently known.

The Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume (IBAC) probably assigned a single color hood lining of black to Dominican College in the 1960s. A list compiled by Kevin Sheard in Academic Dress and Insignia of the World (1970) and an IBAC list from 1972 both described the hood lining as black.
