The first class of students at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College chose orange and green as their school colors in 1887 to symbolize the fruit and leaves of the orange trees in the state.
Academic hood lists published by the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume (IBAC) in 1927, 1948, and 1972 described Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College as having a hood lined orange with a green chevron. In Academic Heraldry in America (1962), Kevin Sheard described the college’s hood lining in an identical manner.
