School color information about St. Mary’s Seminary is not available at this time, but the Marian colors of light blue and white have been combined with gold and black.
The Catalogue of St. Mary’s Seminary 1924-1924 and Announcements 1925-1926 (1925) stated that the “academic costume of St. Mary’s University has been registered with the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume, Albany, N.Y., and follows the American Intercollegiate System, the lining of the hood being of light blue silk with a triple chevron of gold yellow, white and black, the yellow stripe being uppermost.” The catalogue does not say when this hood pattern was registered with the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume (IBAC).
A “triple chevron” (what the Intercollegiate Bureau called a “tri-chevron”) is a single chevron divided into three colors. Each of the smaller chevrons is one to 1½ inches in width, creating a larger three-colored chevron of three to 4½ inches in width.
The seminary first appeared in an IBAC hood lining list in 1927 with nearly the same description – the Bureau used “gold” instead of “gold yellow” – and this hood lining citation did not change in subsequent IBAC lists.
