The College of St. Mary of the Springs adopted black, white, and gold school colors in 1924 because they were a combination of the papal colors (gold and white) and the colors of the Dominican order (black and white) that founded the school.

The Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume (IBAC) first cited a hood lining pattern for the College of St. Mary of the Springs in a 1948 list. The lining pattern was described as gold over white, separated by a black chevron. This description did not change in subsequent publications from the Bureau.
